A creamy Kefir Mousse with a strong cacao flavour

The avocado gives this mousse a creamy, velvety texture without overpowering the cacao and Kefir flavours.

Avocado and cacao or chocolate has been a popular flavour combination in the health food scene for years, and our take on Cacao & Avocado Mousse includes Kefir to provide extra protein and gut-friendly cultures.

Kefir originates from the Caucasus mountains and has been included in local diets for over 2,000 years. It’s made by fermenting Kefir grains –a cluster of live, beneficial bacteria – with fresh milk. Cacao is different to cocoa; cacao is the raw, unrefined bean while cocoa refers to the bean once it’s been roasted. This means that cacao has a stronger, more bitter and sophisticated flavour profile compared to unsweetened cocoa. Which makes it perfect for this recipe where you can adjust the sweetness with the honey and maple syrup.

And if you’d like to give this dessert a touch of decorative garnish, flaked almonds, strawberries, chia seeds are great cacao nibs (which provide a crunchy, nut-like texture without nut allergens!) would all work well.


  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 120ml of Biotiful Kefir, Cacao Kefir or Organic Baked Milk Kefir.
  • 2 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp natural vanilla extract
  • Toppings, optional: flaked almonds, strawberries, cacao nibs, grated dark chocolate, chia seedsCacao Mousse
  1. Add the avocado and Kefir to a large bowl and mash together with a fork
  2. Add the cacao powder, vanilla extract, honey & your toppings of choice
  3. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet and then finish off with a hand blender to produce a creamy mousse consistency
  4. Transfer the mousse to individual bowls and store in the fridge for 20 minutes to set or until ready to eat.
