Homemade Kefir requires a lot of time and patience but can be very rewarding, so we’re revealing how you can make it yourself.

INGREDIENTS

High quality British whole milk –The quality of milk is really important. Kefir grains work best with whole fat, animal milk.

  1. Add a teaspoon of Kefir grains into a glass of milk.
  2. Cover the glass and let it sit out in room temperature for 24 hours. The healthy bacterias and yeast in the kefir grains will start to ferment the milk, preventing it from spoiling while transforming it into Kefir.
  3. Once this has done, strain out the grains so you can use them in another batch. The best way to keep the used grains healthy, is to keep making Kefir. You can do this every 24 hours. If you don’t want to keep making Kefir, put them a cup of milk and set aside in the fridge.

Important things to note: The temperature you store your Kefir at is really crucial to the success of the Kefir. Kefir grains like an average room temperature of around 15 – 30 degrees celsius. Below, the grains become sluggish and it will take longer to ferment. Above, the milk will start to spoil. Use a glass and not metal.
