Lots of people regularly eat or drink dairy products. We are hearing more and more in the media about dairy and its incredible nutritional value. A growing body of research indicates that consuming dairy (as part of a healthy, balanced diet) is associated with multiple health benefits, so we’ve sat down with dietitian Lucy Jones to break down the latest science behind the headlines:

Nutrients in dairy products

Dairy has a plethora of natural benefits to the human body. Dairy products are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, including:

  • Protein- essential for the body to grow and repair itself.
  • Calcium and Phosphorus- these two important nutrients work closely together to build strong bones and teeth.
  • Vitamins such as B12, B2, Biotin and A.

Plain dairy also contains no added sugar. It contains the naturally-occurring sugar lactose which shouldn’t be confused with added/free sugars. Lucy Jones goes on to say that unlike added sugars like cane sugar and corn syrup, which contribute plenty of calories but zero nutritional value, the natural sugars in dairy are part of a nutrient-dense package and are perfectly healthy when consumed within reason.

Health benefits of dairy products

A diet rich in dairy products is linked to increased bone health and a reduced risk of osteoporosis. By consuming dairy products on a regular basis during youth, you can improve your bone mass. Dairy is also associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adults and lowered blood pressure.

Healthier Dairy choices

As Lucy Jones suggests, it is best to choose dairy products that are low in saturated fat and sugar.
